The oldest known depiction of the New World has been found carved onto a 500-year-old ostrich egg.
Evidence suggests that the ostrich egg was the model for casting the oldest previously-known globe to include the New World. Radiology has estimated the egg globe to have been engraved around 1500. (photo) Where the egg originated is unknown for certain, but suspicions point to Florence, Italy. Artistic details and misspellings are the same as on the copper globe which had been thought to be the oldest with the New World.
