The history of the humble hot dog

Baseball and picnic season lead many to think of the great summer food: the hot dog. On 2013 US Independence Day, The Week reporter Carmel Lobello took a look at the history of the humble dog, which will be consumed by the billions this summer alone.

Lobello cites Homer's Odyssey as the first mention of the sausage, but the 13th century Frankfurt, Germany was the place where hot dogs were served at the coronation of Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor.

The timeline continues until 2007 when Joey Chestnut won the Nathan's hot dog-eating contest with 66 dogs in 12 minutes.
