Hadrian’s Wall trail faces erosion challenge

Hadrian's Wall faces a new challenge: waterlogged trails that are causing grass and soil erosion along the trail. Natural England has awarded the Hadrian’s Wall Trust UK£50,000 for drain repair, but visitors can also help.

Dr Nigel Mills, spokesman for the trust, said “We do not want to discourage visitors, but want to avoid grass and soil erosion along the trail.  We want to hear from groups of more than 40 people who are planning to do walks or runs to get in touch so we can advise them on the best way to avoid damaging the route. For example, we advise walkers to walk two or three abreast, rather than in single file to spread the load of their weight.”
