Charlotte Observer: 16th century Spanish fort discovered in NC

Archaeolgists in Burke County, North Carolina hope to discover a 16th century Spanish fort.

"What we are hoping for is evidence of Fort San Juan," said Rob Beck, whose family actually has roots on the land he is unearthing. "It is believed to be built by Juan Pardo between 1566-1568, to house soldiers." Beck and his fellow doctorate student, Chris Rodin, are exploring the 14-acre site in search of the fort. Burned remains were found by archaeologists in 1997 and the students hope to determine the complete layout of the fort.
