Late Saxon "charcoal" graves discovered near Romsey Abbey

Workers doing cleanup work around Romsey Abbey in Hampshire County, England, found more than they bargained for: 14 Saxon graves. (Corrected URL)

The graves, which are believed to date from the late Saxon period, may be those of wealthy citizens, according to researchers. They contained coffin nails and the remains of shrouds as well as a thick layer of charcoal, a special privilege reserved for higher members of society.
