A new genetic study published in Current Biology reveals that European Gypsies originated in northwest India and migrated to the Balkan area of Europe in the 6th century. The study was led by David Comas of Spain's Institute of Evolutionary Biology,
Comas' research shows that the Gypsies emigrated from India in one wave around 1,500 years ago. They arrived in Spain in the 15th century. The genetic analysis was conducted with thirteen Gypsy groups from around Europe, and also showed that intermarriage with Europeans was common.
