It is said that the Carnival of Venice was originated from a victory of the "Repubblica della Serenissima", Venice's previous name, against the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrico in the year 1162. In the honor of this victory, the people started to dance and make reunions in San Marco Square. Apparently this festival started on that period and become official in the Renaissance.
Masquerade balls were a feature of the Carnival season in the 15th century, and involved increasingly elaborate allegorical Royal Entries, pageants and triumphal processions celebrating marriages and other dynastic events of late medieval court life. Such costumed dances were a special luxury of the ducal court of Burgundy.
Come join the Shire Coill Tuar as we bring the pageantry of Venice and the court from Charles VI of France together in a display that will enchant you to dance the entire day and the night away. Dances will be taught during the day, a light side board will be offered during the day and into the early evening, and the dancing will go on until the cows come home... and we gave them the wrong directions!
Due to a conflict of scheduling with the Coronation of Edward II and Thyra I in the Barony of Concordia of the Snows, we have moved to OCTOBER 20th! Please mark your calendars and let everyone know!

A jury of inter-shire costume and fashion judges (who signed up for the chance to do so at Troll) will vote for "La Maschera piu bella", or the Best Mask at the Ball. One of the most important points during the event is the contest for the best mask, placed during the mid hour of the Carnival when we will hold a fashion show to give our dancers a chance to rest.
As this is a family oriented event as well as dance enthusiast event, here are the rest of the things to do during the day!

Feast will be served throughout the day, with a light dayboard and a banquet of delights being offered in the evening for our on-board guests. Evening fare will be served in a buffet in our dining area so that the dancing can go on uninterrupted into the night.
