Archaeologists are looking for evidence of Kitezh, the “Russian Atlantis,” on the shores of Svetloyar Lake near Nizhny Novgorod. According to legend, Kitezh is "a hidden city where the righteous live and work in prayer, and where only the chosen ones can enter."
Researchers dispute the origins of the legend, but new excavations hope to uncover evidence of a medieval city. So far artifacts, dating to the 15th century, have been discovered on the shore of the lake, but nothing at the lake's bottom supports the legend. In 2011, archaeologists found traces of an ancient city on a hillside along a path from the church to the lake. Their research continues.
