Sicily's Roman mosaics return to public view

The 4th century Roman mosaics at the Villa del Casale at the Piazza Armerina in Sicily are considered “the finest in situ in the Roman world.” Now the newly-restored stone tiles are again open to the public. (photo)

"Over 4,100 square metres of mosaic have been cleaned in the restoration and now show their original colours. The old plexiglass roof has also been replaced with a new wooden structure that allows air to reach the remains." The site has been on the World Heritage list since 1997.
