4th century synagogue vandalized in Israel

Israel Antiquities Authority deputy director Uzi Dahari reports that vandals, possibly ultra-Orthodox Jews, have damaged a rare 5th century mosaic in a synagogue in the northern Israeli city of Tiberias.

The mosaic floor of the synagogue, decorated with zodiac signs and the names of the synagogue's chief patrons in ancient Hebrew, Latin and Greek, was partially smashed and covered with graffiti. "It was the best of Jewish art of its time, of the late Roman and early Byzantine period," said Dahari. They ... destroyed what was in front of them without thinking," he said.
