Saxon glass industry at Glastonbury Abbey

A researcher examining excavation reports from Glastonbury Abbey has found that the glass fragments and glassmaking remains found there date to the 680's, much earlier than previously thought.

The excavation reports were made in the 1960s and 1950s. The new date has been obtained by carbon dating samples from the excavations.

The glass furnaces may be associated with rebuilding the abbey around the same time. [photo]
