"FACES" project to identify historical figures

The University of California, Riverside, has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to use state-of-the-art facial recognition software to identify figures in paintings and sculpture.

The software is being tested on Renaissance sources such as paintings by Domenico Ghirlandaio, to identify 15th-century Italian statesman Lorenzo de’ Medici. Compared to his death mask, the FACES: Faces, Art, and Computerized Evaluation Systems project looks at works of art for figures matching de Medici's features.
