Baron Steffan ap Kennydd of Silverwing, of the East Kingdom, reports that the April 14, 2012 Coronation of Kenric and Avelina will feature an authentic Anglo-Saxon ceremony.
His Excellency writes:
Greetings from Baron Steffan ap Kennydd of Silverwing.
As some of you may have heard, the upcoming coronation ceremony of TBH Prince Kenric and Princess Avelina will be rather....different.
Some realms have more or less rigidly specified ceremonials, largely taken from fantasy literature, Hollywood, Arthurian romanticism and a good deal of whole cloth, but the East maintains a tradition of flexibility. This has allowed such folks as Master Ernst, Duke Brion, Earl Edward and Countess Marguerite, and others to provide us increasingly authentic and persona-correct coronations in recent years.
Their Boreal Highnesses (Prince Kenric especially) have expressed a desire for as authentic and persona-correct a ceremony as can be managed within the constraints of SCA regulations and sensibilities. To that end, we are hewing close to the actual text used for Anglo-Saxon coronations in the 10th century.
We are using the Ordo of AEthelraed II (the "First Recension of the St. Dunstan Ordo") (see link below, p. 38 ff), informed by other sources such as the 8th century Missa pro Regibus in the Pontifical of Egbert (see link below, p. 100 ff), all necessarily abridged and secularized, of course. This will involve some elements rarely if ever seen at an SCA coronation. Among these will be a couple of performances of secularized hymns in Gregorian chant, arranged by Lord Lucien de Pontivy and Lady Aldreda de Tamwurthe, with new Latin wording by myself. There will be a few other surprises as well.
We're very excited about this opportunity to present an evocation of a period Anglo Saxon-era coronation. If you've been on the fence about attending Coronation, or you don't do court, I hope this may entice you. Oh, and stay until the end.....
In service to the Crown,
Steffan ap Kennydd
