JStor to offer open access to its online database

Kevin Guthrie, the president of Ithaka, the nonprofit organization that runs JStor, the online database which archives 1,400 academic journals, has annouced that the subscription service will allow users to view 70 journals after registering with the website.

The new Register & Read program, which is now in beta, will let visitors to the site read, but not download or print, the articles from a large range of journal. Most, however, will remain available by subscription only. Register & Read is a trial program, and may be closed or modified. The program is scheduled to begin in 2012.
