Eumathios Philokales reveals two Byzantine churches in Cyprus

The Eumathios Philokales project, which focuses on Byzantine monuments, has announced that excavations at two churches have revealed earlier religious buildings dating to the 7th and 11th centuries.

Experts working at the excavation at Ayia Marina church in Kandou have found five gold coins depicting Constantine X Doukas (1059-1067), showing that the church was constructed during the 11th century. Panagia, the second church, at Kofinou revealed "a 7th century three-aisled transitional barrel-vaulted basilica, a room to the west and a row of adjacent rooms to the south which probably indicate the presence of a monastic complex."
