Up Helly Aa, the rousing Viking winterfest held each year in the Shetland Islands, has been named number four in a list of the ten best winter festivals compiled by the British travel publication Wanderlust. Stephen McGinty of The Scotsman has the story.
Up Helly Aa, which celebrates the end of Yule, begins with a torchlit procession and includes the ceremonial burning of a Viking longship, takes place annually in Lerwick, Scotland. It is considered Europe's largest fire festival.
The Viking festival is one of two festivals in Europe on the Wanderlust list, which also includes the Bikaner Camel Festival in Rajasthan, India and the Ice and Snow Festival in China.
