Fifteen miles from modern Kilkenny, Ireland, a secret has been buried for centuries. That secret is the lost early Norman town of Newtown, now being decribed as "Kilkenny's Pompeii." LIDAR technology has disclosed the "streets, towns and dwellings" of the settlement.
Newtown was considered an important city in the 13th century, but disappeared after Henry VIII closed nearby Jerpoint Abbey. The Heritage Council has commissioned a plan to excavate the site, which it believes will offer "a rare surviving example of an abandoned medieval town, complete with standing remains and with quality documentation."
