Viking treasures to be displayed in Yorkshire, England

In 2007, metal detectorists David and Andrew Whelan hit the jackpot when they discovered a huge hoard of Viking treasure in a field north of Harrogate, England. Now the Vale of York Viking Hoard will return to Harrogate for an exhibition at the Mercer Art Gallery.

The precious objects were found packed in a large silver bowl and included 617 silver coins, 65 other silver objects and a single gold arm ring, dating to the 10th century and originating from central Asia, Ireland, Russia, Scandinavia and continental Europe. The artifacts will be displaed in conjunction with an exhibit by printmaker Hester Cox entitled Cox Hester Cox: Artist’s Impression, A Printmaker’s Response to the Vale of York Viking Hoard. It will run through January 15, 2012.
