13th century graveyard in Italy reveals strange burials

A woman with nails driven into her skull and another surrounded by 17 dice have led archaeologists to speculate that a cemetery in Tuscany may have been a witch's graveyard.

The woman with the nailed skull also had her clothes nailed to her body and was buried without a coffin or shroud. Another female body was found surrounded by 17 dice. 17 is an unlucky number in Italy associated with death.

Despite the cemetery being on known hallowed ground in the period, the archaeologist thinks that the odd burials indicate the women were killed for practicing witchcraft. The nailed skull may have been to prevent the woman from rising from the dead. [photo]
