12th century manuscript missing from Spanish cathedral

Pilgrims to the cathedral Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain might have been guided there by the Codex Calixtinus, a 12th century guidebook which has mysteriously disappeared from the church.

The Codex Calixtinus was found missing from a controlled access room on July 6, 2011. "We are investigating its disappearance," a police spokeswoman said, according to AFP news agency. Experts say that the book is so well known that it would be impossible to sell on the open market.
