Did Giotto paint the shroud of Turin?

A new book by an Italian art historian claims that the Shoud of Turin is neither a biblical relic nor a medieval hoax, but a creation of the famous Rennaissance artist Giotto.

The book theorizes that after the real shroud disintegrated after centuries of use as a relic, Giotto was comissioned to make a replacement. The historian claims to have found Giotto's signature in the markings on the shroud and a reference to the date it was created, 1315.
