Workers extracting turf from a bog in Galway, Ireland have found a wooden keg full of butter. The butter could be as much as 2,500 years old.
Iron Age people were known to bury food in bogs as a form of cold storage. The loss of the large quantity of butter, weighing almost 28 lbs (13 kg), would have been a big loss for the family that buried it.
The butter and the wooden vessel will be tested in the hopes of getting an exact date and other information.
