John Lippiett, chief executive of the Mary Rose Trust, is sending a piece of history into space: "a parrel, a three-inch wooden ball used as part of the mechanism to hoist the sails of Henry VIII's flagship." The artifact will be launched into orbit with the space shuttle Endeavour. (photos)
''The Mary Rose was as revolutionary in technological advances 500 years ago as the space shuttle was in the early 1980s. Both have helped pioneer exploration and advance the sciences. It is most appropriate to mark their place in history in this manner,''said Lippiett when he presented the parrel to the crew on a visit to the Mary Rose site last year.
The Endeavour's final launch is scheduled for May 16, 2011.
