Minimus brings Latin education to school kids

For the last five years, a little mouse has been responsible for bringing Latin back to English schoolrooms. Minimus: Starting out in Latin, by Barbara Bell, is the story of a rodent living in the home of a Roman family in Vindolanda.

Through the book, students have learned simple converational Latin, as well as learning about Roman life in Britain. “Modern language teachers at Yarmouth High can see real benefit in learning Latin because it gives students a deeper understanding of the structure of language and enables them to pick up grammar and vocabulary much more easily,” said East Norfolk schools’ gifted and talented co-ordinator Jane Maguire.
