In an article for the Guardian, culture reporter Charlotte Higgins explores mistakes made in the recent film, The Eagle, based on the book The Eagle of the Ninth, about the search for the lost legionary standard of the Roman Ninth Legion.
Higgins writes, "Only a pedant, of course, would expect historical veracity from a sword-and-sandals film, particularly one that is aiming pretty clearly for contemporary resonance. But – what can I say? I have a pedantic streak." Among the missteps: the Picts destroyed the Ninth Legion.
