In addition to his other achievements, Leonardo da Vinci may have been the
inventor of the automobile.
Leonard da Vinci was the ultimate "Renaissance man" but was he the inventor of
the modern automobile? In a recent project for Florence, Italy's Museum of
History and Science, researchers built an "automobile" based on sketches from
da Vinci's notebooks. The machine runs on springs rather than fuel, but well
could have been the world's first self-propelled vehicle.
"This has been a big adventure which has also helped us to develop tools to
help people unaware of Leonardo's scholarship understand this complex device,"
said Paolo Galluzzi, director of the museum.
Three models of da Vinci cars will be on display at the museum until June 5,
2004 and can be viewed online at http:/www.imss.fi.it/news/eautomobile.html
