Historic Scottish Sites to Become Fair Game

Nearly 800 historic archaeological sites in Scotland are set to be stripped of their protected status. Historic Scotland has elected to strip 800 sites from the organization's official roster, citing that they fail to meet the new criteria of of "cultural significance" and "spiritual value". Critics of the plan feel that the sites, which include ancient forts, carved crosses, standing stones, cairns, war memorials, and prehistoric settlements, will be threatened by treasure hunters and developers if not protected. Scotland has nearly 8,000 historic sites.
