A new medieval thriller, starring Paul Bettany and Willem Dafoe, brings the 14th century alive through painstaking recreation which includes cold castles and the Black Plague. "The Reckoning," a new film set in the 14th century, is the story of a fugutive priest who joins up with a troupe of traveling players. Based on Barry Unsworth's 1996 novel, Morality Play, the film has been praised for its attention to detail. The Middle Ages is shown with all its warts, including drafty castles and the Black Plague, which is a plot element. The film opened in early March in the Los Angeles area, with later releases planned for other cities.
