A new series on Great Britain's Channel 4 challenges modern builders to construct a Roman villa using only period tools and materials. The series, Rome Wasn't Built in a Day, begins on Channel 4 on January 20, 2011 at 9pm. (photos)
The challenge is sponsored by English Heritage, which gives the contestants six months to complete the project. The builders must also use only building techniques known in 320 CE. According to the article, "The villa is being built in Wroxeter, Shropshire, which was once the site of Viroconium, a major Roman city and the fourth largest settlement in Roman Britain, which was controlled by the Roman Empire between AD 43 and about 410."
