Modern illumination

In recent years, it has become the vogue to learn calligraphy for special occasions. Now the medieval artform of illumination may also see a modern revival. (photos)

Under the supervision of Ellen Frank in her New York studio, a group of interns are learning the ancient skill of illumination and applying it to Frank's modern designs. One series of paintings uses gold leaf and calligraphy to commorate "cities around the world that have experienced conflict and trauma."

The "Cities of Peace" will be on display at the Guild Hall Museum, 158 Main Street, East Hampton, Long Island, New York, until January 15, 2011. For more information visit the Guild Hall website.
