A fire at Greece's 12th century Serbian Orthodox Hilandariou Monastery
destroyed parts of the monks living quarters but spared the monastery's
collection of relics, manuscripts and icons.
A 12th century monastery on Mount Athos was recently the site of fire which
destroyed most of the monks' living quarters, leaving only the original walls
left standing. There was also damage to frescoes from the 16th and 18th
centuries. Spared, however were precious manuscripts and books, some of which
date back to the monastery's founding. The fire is thought to have been
started by a faulty heater.
