Finnish Saga Inspiration for "Lord of the Rings"

National Geographic: The Kalevala, the Finnish national epic poem, may have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" according to researchers. When director Peter Jackson brought J.R.R. Tolkien's epic saga "Lord of the Rings" to the silver screen, he opened the door for renewed interest by scholars in what inspired the author's work. Many are looking at Finland's Viena Karelia region where oral tradition has kept ancient epics safe for thousands of years. Among them are the Kalevala, an epic poem which features many of themes in Tolkien's book.
