Uffizi Museum to be Renovated

The Palazzo degli Uffizi, an art museum in Florence, Italy which has stood since 1575, is about to get its first face-lift in several decades. The Uffizi is world-renowned for having one of the single greatest art collections, and is home to several priceless works of the Renaissance. A $750 million overhaul of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy will allow visitors to view even more of the museum's great works of art. The renovation, set to begin in 2006, will include a seven-story tall, canopy-like structure designed by architect Arata Isozaki. Gallery space in the new structure will increase from the current 7,200 square yards to 15,600 square yards and the number of works displayed will increase from 1200 to 2000, arranged chronologically or by school.
