"Sword in Stone" Mystery to be Unearthed

Discovery News: In Tuscany, Italy, a sword thrust Excalibur-like into a stone is being studied in earnest by researchers. Allegedly, a knight in the Middle Ages thrust the stone into the sword as he made the decision to give up combat and become a hermit. The stone-in-sword was thought to be a modern hoax, but researchers now say that the sword's metal is definitely of medieval origin.

The tomb of Sir Galgano Guidotti, the knight said to have plunged the sword into the stone, has been sought for centuries. Ground-penetrating radar analysis now suggests that the tomb lies underneath the stone, and researchers hope to begin excavating the site later this year.
