El Cid: epitome of the medieval leader?

Benjamin Smith is a professor in the Department of Languages and Cultures at Minnesota State University Moorhead. His paper, Principles of Leadership in the Middle Ages: The case of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar has been recommended by Medievalists.net.

In his paper, Smith looks at the concepts of medieval leadership through the study of Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (El Cid) and how he fit the feudal ideal of a leader. "I will highlight the virtues of an every-day man literally enlarged by the way he applied seven principles of leadership. In fact, not only was this every-day protagonist a man of integrity, the seven principal qualities he possessed were valued by the society in which he lived and continue to be valued by subsequent readers today."
