17th Century Hand Grenade from the Battle of Killiecrankie Discovered

News Telegraph: A fragment from a hand grenade has been recovered from the site of the 17th century Battle of Killiecrankie, a celebrated Jacobite victory. A fragment of what might be the earliest British hand grenade has been found at the site of the Battle of Killiecrankie, the 1689 battle where Jacobite supporters defeated the English.

"The 17th century grenades were iron spheres, slightly bigger than a cricket ball, packed with gunpowder and with a fuse on the top, like a cartoon bomb," said Tony Pollard, of Glasgow University.

War historians had previsouly believed that hand grenades were first used in England in 1719.
