"Magistri" to bring Latin to British schoolchildren

The Iris Project wants to bring the classics to British schools. To that end, the charity is sending "Oxford University undergraduates into primary schools in Blackbird Leys, Headington and Kidlington to teach the ancient language to nine and 10-year-olds."

The Iris Project plans to monitor students in the program to see if the classical education aids in their reading and writing skills. Christ Church student Shivani Singhal, who taught one of the classes, said: "What is really relevant is that Latin helps children get to grips with literacy issues in their native language, and shows them something they otherwise would not get a chance to see."
