Are blue jeans period? A new study dates the modern clothing basic to at least 17th century Italy as shown in the paintings of Italian artist dubbed the "Master of the Blue Jeans." (photo)
Blue jeans were previously traced to the textile mills of New Hampshire, but the paintings, some of which are now on exhibit in Paris, clearly show the use of indigo-dyed cloth, threaded with white. "There is blue jean in every painting except one," said curator Gerlinde Gruber, who helped to identify the anonymous artist's works.
