Known World Players Announce Production of Euripides' Medea at Pennsic 39

The Known World Players company, whose motto is “Period plays in a period manner,” will mount its final production, Medea, at Pennsic 39. The performance will take place August 13 at 8 pm in the Performing Arts Pavilion.

The starring role of Medea will be played by Baroness Gwendolyn the Graceful, a subject of Æthelmearc who resides in the East, and Jason will be played by Duke Dag Thorgrimsson of the Midrealm.

The play explores part of the body of Greek myth and legend that was the playwright's cultural heritage. Medea, daughter of the king of Colchis, having aided Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece and become his wife, is faced with betrayal. Observing the classical unities of time and place, the story unfolds in a single location and in the course of one day.

Company owner and artistic director THL Tyzes Sofia chose the tragedy, a personal favorite, to pursue an interest in Greek drama that began with the company's opening show, the comedy Lysistrata, at Pennsic 31. The production's visual aspects are based on a 15th century Strassburg woodcut depicting a performance of a classical comedy.

Her Ladyship will continue to pursue other period theatre projects at future Pennsics.
