William Wallace was executed by the British and his remains were destroyed, but for the 700th anniversary of his death, Scotland plans to convey a symbolic coffin 450 miles from London to St Kentigern's Church at Lanarkshire, where tradition says Wallace married his sweetheart. The coffin will then be buried in the churchyard. Both Mel Gibson and Scottish actor Sean Connery have been invited to attend the service.

William Wallace, Scotland's national hero, has never been given a proper
burial, but that is now to change.
With the film "Braveheart," Mel Gibson brought to story of William Wallace,
Scotland's national hero, to the world, but no grave exists for those who want
to pay their respects. That is about to change, however, since plans are
underway to grant Wallace a burial fit for a hero.
