13th century coin hoard found in Macedonia

Archeologists have unearthed a jug full of coins at Skopje Fortress, a Byzantine-era fortress also known as The Kale.

The 44 gold coins date to the 13th century when Skopje was under the rule of John III Doukas. The 77 silver coins are Venetian in origin and and come from different Byzantine time periods. [photo in both articles]
