Students choose gladiator life

This summer, twenty students from the University of Regensburg in Germany are foregoing their usual pizza and computers in favor of Roman gladiator training.

The project "has been funded by EU€200,000 from businessman Hans Schaller, whose hobby is recreating historic events and participating as the character Schallus Brutalus Maximus.”

The students will train together four days a week and eat special gladiator diets of berries and white beans as recommended in Roman texts. At the completition of the program, they plan to perform at the former Roman army camp Carnuntum in Austria.
