Restoration experts using ultra-violet technology have rediscovered details of 14th wall paintings by the Italian master Giotto in the Peruzzi Chapel at the Santa Croce Church in Florence, Italy. (photo)
"We knew we could get some very interesting results from our scientific diagnostics but when we looked under ultra-violet light, all of a sudden all these very faint paintings that were ruined by old restorations took on a new life," said Cecilia Frosinini, co-ordinator of the project.
The works, painted on dry plaster around 1320, have faded over the years. The ultra-violet light techniques will be used with care since the continual use of the light could cause additional damage to the paintings.
