Not reenacting, re-creating

What's the difference between reenacting and re-creating? That's the question asked by reporter Winston Ross of the Eugene, Oregon Register-Guard when he visted the recent 18th annual Frontier Heritage Fair.

According to SCA member Roderick MacLucas, who had a woodworking booth at the fair, the difference is clear:

"Reenactments must be historically accurate, and re-creations can be loose, liberal interpretations of the past, even the way one might have wished things went. The Boston Tea Party, for example, with a bunch of people sitting around playing pinochle and drinking English breakfast tea, rather than arguing over tariffs."
