A hoard of coins dating from 150 BCE was discovered recently near Maidstone, England by a
couple using a metal detector.
Metal detectors may soon prove to be the most important tool in the amateur
archaeologist's kit. The latest detector finding was made by a couple from
Sittingbourne who dug up more than 360 coins dating to the 2nd century BCE on a
farm near Maidstone.
Peter and Christine Johnson were astounded to find such a
treasure on their first time out. The coins were identified as from the
Cantiaci tribe by using the Internet. If the coins are classified as treaure,
their value will be split between the Johnsons and the land owner.
