The fleur-de-lis: not just for the Saints

Many Americans recognize the fleur-de-lis only as the team logo of the Super Bowl-winning New Orleans Saints, but the symbol has a long, rich history.

Once used on Greek and Roman coins, the fleur-de-lis is best known as the symbol of French royalty, established by Charlemagne in the 9th century.

 

Mistaken for team affiliation

 My wife went to synagogue the day before the Superbowl wearing a fleur-de-lys necklace she got at a Ren Faire.  Someone commented, "Guess we know which team you are rooting for".  She had no idea what they were talking about, as it was purely coincidence.
