The watch shown i the painting is thought to have originated in southern Germany sometime after 1500. "As Cosimo was a great patron of science and technology, it is entirely likely he would have owned a watch of this kind which he displays here with pride," said Science Museum curator Rob Skitmore.

Experts believe they may have identified the earliest depiction of a watch in a painting. The timepiece is featured in the 450-year-old portrait of Cosimo I de Medici, Duke of Florence.
