Artemisian Seeks Financial Help for Bone Marrow Transplant

Lady Dub Essa O'Fidhne of Artemisia, with sponsorship of the National Transplant Assistance Fund, is asking fellow SCAdians for help in paying for a bone marrow transplant for leukemia. HL Isabeau de Sevingy, a friend of Lady Dub Essa, writes:

Greeting my SCAdian cousins,

For the past two years, it has been my deepest pleasure to hold the friendship of Mary Ward (Lady Dub Essa) close to my heart and I am now in fear of losing her. Late this past summer, we sat vigil with her husband Owen, and waited for Mary to fight her way clear of the coma that almost took her following her last round of chemo. She succeeded and has returned to health. However, chemo will no longer work and this remission she is in is only expected to last about 6 months. She has a chance. It's a very good chance, but only with the transplant.

We are sending her to Madrone for the transplant. There she will stay for 100 days following the procedure. A week after the donating his bone marrow, her son returns to us in Artemisia and her husband must stay here to continue working. She will be in good care, but only if we can raise the money that her insurance has denied her. She and her family need $17K prior to the transplant. We have 90K members in the SCA. At $0.30 a person, she'd succeed in her fundraising, but we all know that it is impossible to hope for every one of us to send in even such a small amount. Therefore, I ask that everyone who can and will, send in as much as you feel comfortable with. Please, also forward this request to your other lists.

I have faith in the members of the SCA.

Lady Dub Essa O'Fidhne herself has written the following letter:

Greetings! My name is Lady Dub Essa O'Fidhne, from the Shire of Gryphon's Lair in the Kingdom of Artemisia. I have been active in the SCA for over 5 years.

I have Acute Myeloid Leukemia, diagnosed August 2001. Since then, I have had 2 rounds of chemotherapy. Since the chemo isn't working, the doctors say I need a bone marrow transplant. After checking the bone marrow donor list, I match none of the 6 million people on that list. So my doctors say I need a special bone marrow transplant that, while it's been done for 10 years in Europe, is still considered experimental in the U.S. And since it is experimental, my main insurance company refuses to pay for it. I do have Medicare, but it is limited in what it covers.

So I am asking my SCA family and friends for help. I am scheduled to start treatment in Seattle December 2nd, but before they will start, they want $17,000.00. If you feel you can help financially, that would be greatly appreciated. Pass the hat at your next Fighter practice or event! Skip lunch at Pizza Hut and send the money you saved! Have a raffle, whatever you think you can do.

To donate, send a check or money order made out to: NTAF Southwest Bone Marrow In the memo section write: In honor of Mary Ward. This is very important so the money will be put in my account!

Send the check or money order to:

NTAF Southwest Bone Marrow Transplant Fund
3475 West Chester Pike
Suite 230
Newton Square PA 19073

These people are up front and can be checked out at http://www.transplantfund.org/ . I am using this non-profit organization so you can be assured the money you send will be used for my medical bills and not to pay for my new red shoes!

Thank you for your help
