A team of archaeologists from Newcastle university and English Heritage hope, as much as possible, to preserve the site which is in danger from erosion, as well as learn more about the Roman population of the area. They are also interested in what they will find out about Roman funeral practices.
Hadrian's wall cemetery to be excavated

Excavation has begun on "the first systematic excavation of a cemetery on Hadrian's Wall," a Roman cremation cemetery which is part of the World Heritage Site at Birdoswald Fort, Cumbri.
