Local volunteers will work along with experts to excavate a field near the remaining parish church, where they hope to find the foundations for the medieval abbey. Holm Cultram Abbey, founded in 1150, was the largest monastery in Cumbria.

Officials at English Heritage Lottery have announced that the Holm Cultram Abbey in Abbeytown, England has received a grant for UK£48,000 to carry out an extensive at the Cistercian abbey.
